The 118-year-old parent body has been committed to "Empowerment of women through education". The Institution has a century long history of dedicated work towards making women educated and self-reliant. MKSSS, Pune was established in 1896 by the great visionary and social worker Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve to provide shelter to destitute women.
On 14th June in the year 1896, in the village "Hingne" near Pune city, Maharshi Karve started a "Home for Widows", along with a school for Widows, so that they become educated and self-reliant. He fought throughout his life to make this happen. The “Home for Widows” was then named as "Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha" and the school was named as "Mahilashram High School".
Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, (MKSSS), Pune has diversified branches all over Maharashtra in India and about 25,000 girl students are learning in these institutions. Over the period of last 118 years, the Institution has grown like a banyan tree and at present, it is running 60 numbers of educational and other units. These units are located at Pune, Satara, Wai, Ratnagiri, Nagpur, Kamshet etc. All these units are meant only for girls or women.
Around 25,000 girl students are learning in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary, Higher Secondary schools and Colleges. We have established Engineering, Architecture, Management, Nursing, Fashion Technology, Vocational Training Institute, Health Center etc. These branches strive to develop women into truly performing citizens in today’s globalization era. We also have hostel facilities for students and working women and old age home for senior citizens.
Konkan, with its magical blend of rich green hills & glades running down the zig-zag coast line of the ARABIAN SEA, is justly famous not only as Ratnachi Khaan but also as the most beautiful region of Maharashtra which is also the birth place of Maharshi Anna. Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha’s Maharshi Karve Mahila Mahavidyalaya Ratnagiri is committed to the cause of girl’s empowerment through access to higher education in computer application.
Keeping the objectives and vision set up by Maharshi Karve the MKSSS has initiated to start the educational project at Shirgaon, Ratnagiri in the year 1992. With the long history of 20 years, the Ratangiri Project has reached to the crest to provide the best education to the women of Konkan region and its surroundings. The Ratnagiri Project is providing superlative education to about 350 girl students per year who wish to fulfill their desire of education in computers.
The Institute bears two highly furnished beautiful buildings, well suited and comfortable two hostel buildings which can accommodate about 200 students on the beautiful premises of 5.5 acres of land at Shirgaon, Ratnagiri generously donated by Hon. Shri Manohar Bhat (Son of soil), Pune.
Ratnagiri Project has undertaken various activities which includes BCA College, B.Ed college, Fashion Designing, training center for anganwadi teachers and nursing course, etc.
